Planning to go to Japan?

Almost every Japan visa needs some Japanese. Here are the main exams and the visas they unlock — pick the route that matches your goal.

JLPT

The standard proficiency test (N5 → N1)

  • Student visa (留学): N5/N4 minimum, or join a language school
  • Engineer / Specialist: N2 preferred by most employers
  • General work visa: N3+ depending on the company

JFT-Basic

JF Test for Basic Japanese — around A2 level

  • Specified Skilled Worker (SSW / 特定技能): JFT-Basic + an industry skill test
  • Alternative: clear JLPT N4 instead of JFT-Basic
  • Held multiple times a year — easier to schedule than JLPT

EJU & Others

Specialised exams for specific paths

  • EJU: required for Japanese university undergrad admission
  • NAT-TEST / J.TEST: JLPT alternatives accepted by some schools & employers
  • BJT: business Japanese — boosts points for the Highly Skilled Professional visa
